Interesting Trios: 

Daniel Schnyder's Trio is quite challenging to perform and thus is very rewarding. Schnyder makes use of the full range and technical capabilities of each instrument. All three parts require extended techniques, and "special effects." Although rhythmically and technically complex, the piece is ultimately accessible, with flavors of pop or rock music, "firework-funk" sections and un-metered unison lines reminiscent of Middle-Eastern folk music (Muwashah).

Jason Levis' Trio She is Inside Remembering is a beautifully written piece that makes makes me reminisce fondly on my time spent in the San Francisco Bay area playing with thoughtful musicians and improvising wholly in the moment. Jason's lyrical melodies soar!

I'd like to take a moment to thank my wife Lisa Marie, as she is a shining example of a helpmate, my best friend and biggest fan (as I am hers). Without her, I would be floundering in the turbulent waters of musical freelance without the rutter of education and sail of support via love. To my UCLA friends, thank you for being you...and such talented "yous" at that! And to the UCLA faculty, to whom I owe so much, I can only say thank you for your coaching, leading, prodding and advice - I will continue to learn from your wisdom for many years to come!


New Orleans has become one of the most standard pieces of repertoire for the bass trombone. Written for French bass trombonist Paul Bernard, the piece is rife with jazz influences: including blue notes and blues scales as well as jazz harmonies in the accompiniment, stride piano bass lines uses of syncopated 16th-note rhythms, and glissandos all hallmarks of ragtime music - a significant influence on this and many pieces by Bozza. The influence of the jazz is unmistakable, and the imagery of the emotional extremes of New Orleans is vividly evoked by the music.

Spillman's Concerto was written for Ed Anderson in 1959, and subsequently premiered in Rochester by David Richey in 1960. The concerto was written to exploit the 88H, which was a big thing at Eastman at the time (with tonal centers of F, E, and C) and to demonstrate both the lyrical and the agile qualities of the trombone.

Hosannah from Cantico del sol di San Francesco d'Assisi, S. 677 (1862) Franz Liszt (1811-1886) Listz's Hossanah was first composed for baritone (and male chorus ad lib.), organ (or harmonium) in 1862, based on the hymn Cantico di San Francesco then re-arranged for trombone and organ in 1867. Hoassanah is the only known work written by Liszt for the bass trombone.
