Portfolio-career coaching

You wear
many hats.

Many Hats helps performers, teachers, scholars, and makers turn a pile of roles into one coherent, sustainable career. We find the through-line connecting the work, then build the life around it.

One coherent career

The idea

One person. Several callings. One life.

A portfolio career grows from the recognition that your roles belong to the same life. The performer, teacher, scholar, writer, mentor, organizer, or maker may seem to be following different paths. Often, a deeper commitment connects them. That connection is the through-line. Once we can name it, we can decide which roles deserve more room, which opportunities belong together, and what kind of life the work should support.

Who this is for

You hold more than one role, and lately they feel like they are pulling in different directions.

Your résumé reads like three different people, and you are tired of explaining how the pieces fit.

You are proud of the range of your work and want it to become something larger than a scattered list of accomplishments.

You are in the middle of a shift, adding one role, setting another down, or trying to shape the next stage deliberately.

Ways we work together

Three ways in.

Single session

The Clarity Session

A focused conversation about the many roles you carry, the work each one gives you, and what each one asks of you. We identify the through-line, name the tension, and determine a practical next step.

When you feel scattered and need a place to begin.
When you feel scattered and want footing.
Short-term engagement

Portfolio-Career Coaching

A series of sessions for bringing the full range of your work into focus. We examine how your roles relate, determine which ones belong at the center, and shape a career structure that reflects your abilities, commitments, ambitions, and financial needs.

When you are ready to build the next stage of your career.
Ongoing

Continuing Counsel

Regular conversations for people whose working lives keep changing. When the balance shifts, a new opportunity appears, or an old role no longer fits, we return to the through-line and decide what comes next.

When your career is active, evolving, and already in motion.

Portfolio-career mapping

Don't know where to start?

Map the roles you carry. See what each one contributes, what it costs, and where the strongest connections appear.

This tool offers a first look at how your roles function together. The point is to find the through-line, then decide what kind of career and life you want to build around it.

The Through-Line

You are not scattered. You are under-mapped.

Use the Cost vs. Gives framework to name what each role contributes, what it asks from you, and how the roles can become one coherent portfolio-career map.

    The Costs and Contributions Framework

What does each role give you, and what does it ask of you?

Name each role, then consider its contribution to your energy, identity, income, and future. Record its costs with the same honesty. The roles that nourish several parts of your life often reveal the strongest threads.

    Working Through-Line

    Synthesize the pattern.

Answer in your own language. The tool will produce a first-pass sentence that you can revise into a biography, professional headline, project description, course description, artist statement, or statement of purpose.

    Working through-line

I help performers, teachers, scholars, and makers bring their many roles into one coherent, sustainable career.

Your map will sharpen as you name what each hat gives you and what each one costs.

    Where the roles are pulling.

These scores describe the current relationship among your roles. Look for the places where energy, identity, income, and future reinforce one another, and the places where they compete.

    Choose the next move

    Make the map useful.

A portfolio career needs enough structure to support the whole life. Choose the next move that brings your roles into a clearer relationship.

Your strongest roles may contribute more to your identity than to your income. Consider where one of these roles could support a clearer paid offering or professional opportunity.

    Who you'd be working with

I coach from inside the portfolio career.

I have spent my working life wearing several hats at once: performer, educator, ethnomusicologist, African American Studies scholar, writer, author, mentor, and maker. For years, friends, colleagues, and students have come to me for help making sense of working lives that pull in several directions and refuse to fit neatly inside a single title.

That experience shapes the way I coach. We look closely at the full range of what you do, find the through-line connecting it, and build a professional life that can hold the whole of your work. The goal is coherence without giving up range.
